It\u2019s a night for scares, candy, tricks, and treats. While that\u2019s good and fun, are you sure you are not inadvertently (or purposefully) tricking your system\u2019s users?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">Here are four ways you may be tricking your users instead of treating them to an amazing user experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Your_Visuals_Are_Impossible_for_the_Color_Blind_to_Distinguish\"><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #f7911e;\">1. Your Visuals Are Impossible for the Color Blind to Distinguish<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">Want to experience a real nightmare? Try avoiding the cinnamon flavor jelly beans when you are colorblind and thus can\u2019t make them out from the cherry ones in your Halloween loot! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7835 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.abstracta.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/jelly-beans-deuteranopia-min.jpg\" alt=\"jelly-beans-deuteranopia-min\" width=\"640\" height=\"436\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Jellybeans look like for the color blind (right) vs what they look like normally (left).<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blunders like this happen all the time for the color blind, even when they are accessing content online. For example, imagine you are a huge Newcastle soccer fanatic and you want to read what <a href=\"http:\/\/wearecolorblind.com\/example\/bbc-online-football-tables\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this chart<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the BBC soccer web page reveals about the outcomes of its past 10 games:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7843 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.abstracta.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Screen-Shot-2016-10-26-at-1.59.01-PM.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2016-10-26 at 1.59.01 PM\" width=\"679\" height=\"348\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">Can you tell how many games Newcastle has won based on the rectangles on the right?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">Nope.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">Here is how the table looks to the rest of the population that doesn\u2019t suffer from color blindness:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7845 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.abstracta.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Screen-Shot-2016-10-26-at-2.13.25-PM-min.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2016-10-26 at 2.13.25 PM-min\" width=\"673\" height=\"336\" \/><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What a difference! Click <a href=\"http:\/\/wearecolorblind.com\/example\/bbc-online-football-tables\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be able to scroll over the chart, switching from the view of someone who is color blind to that of one with normal vision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you can see, it is important to keep colors in mind when designing the visual elements of an app, site, etc. You might not think about it often, but <a href=\"http:\/\/wearecolorblind.com\/article\/a-quick-introduction-to-color-blindness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">colorblindness<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> affects about 8% of the male population, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/technology\/10-surprising-facts-about-mark-zuckerberg\/2012\/05\/30\/gJQAJ9yJ2U_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mark Zuckerberg<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (which is why Facebook\u2019s signature color is blue, a color he can see really well). Women, on the other hand, are far less likely to be color blind, with only 1 in every 200 women being affected by it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">To avoid this tricky situation for your users, make sure that important information is not only conveyed by color, but also with plenty of texture and contrast (and no, red letters on a green background won\u2019t work). You can even employ different shapes for icons or symbols instead of assigning color labels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just these small adjustments will make your site\u2019s user experience a treat for all! Your Users&#8217; Data is Vulnerable to Hackers<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">This second \u201ctrick\u201d on your users, having vulnerable systems, can cause the jack-o-lantern to hit the fan, not only for them, but also your company\u2019s reputation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">One of the greatest fears any internet user has is data theft from passwords to credit card numbers. Unfortunately, this fear is a legitimate one and not some ridiculous nightmare that you only get from watching scary movies and overdosing on Halloween candy. Every day new stories come out about cyber attacks directed at companies like SONY, Target, Yahoo!, etc. as well as governmental organizations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is even a worldwide group of hackers called <a href=\"http:\/\/anonofficial.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anonymous<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who seem to be celebrating Halloween all the time with their creepy Guy Fawkes masks&#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/fgXNALyS0lWqQ\" width=\"480\" height=\"231\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most infamous hacks of all time was the data breach of the website, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashleymadison.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AshleyMadison.com<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in August 2015; a true-life horror story for the 500,000 users who were exposed for using this site that made millions of dollars per year by helping people start affairs. Ashley Madison users (some of whom were government officials, tv personalities, religious leaders, etc) relied on the site\u2019s discretion and security, and so, when they were caught red-handed by hackers who released personal account information,<strong> their skeletons were forced to come out of the closet.<\/strong> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">Whether your site or system is something used for innocent or more dubious pursuits, it is critical to do everything you can to ensure its security and minimize the risk of breaches. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>TIP!\u00a0Running penetration and security tests will help you avoid having to dig your hacked site\u2019s grave!<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Your_UI_is_Shady_Dark_Patterns\"><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #f7911e;\">3. Your UI is Shady (Dark Patterns)<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">You know what is a great costume for Halloween? Slim Shady. You know what should never be blatantly or covertly shady? Your site\u2019s design. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">There is a trick that is taking even some major sites by storm known as dark patterns, UI designs that deceive visitors into buying things they don\u2019t want, subscribing to lists that are almost impossible to be removed from, signing undesirable user agreements, etc. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">Although in the short term these designs may help boost your numbers, they will ultimately poison your relationship with users! <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/33YzPdX6JCwus\" width=\"480\" height=\"352\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.90percentofeverything.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harry Brignull<\/a><\/span><\/span>, an advocate for bringing to light these designs in order to spread awareness and stop them from being used, there are several reasons why a good designer may turn to the \u201cshady side\u201d. In his blog, he writes, \u201c<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dark Patterns are often conversion rate optimization projects that have gone wrong because of an unhealthy working environment.\u201d He also calls this design method \u201cblack hat UI\u201d comparing it to the deceptive tactics used in black hat SEO. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Below are some examples he uses to demonstrate these tricks (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/harrybr\/ux-brighton-dark-patterns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">source<\/a><\/span>):<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7840 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.abstracta.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Screen-Shot-2016-10-26-at-11.52.29-AM-min.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2016-10-26 at 11.52.29 AM-min\" width=\"663\" height=\"464\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">In the case of Orbitz you can see just how simple and fast the process is to purchase a flight, and then by design, in order to cancel your purchase, you have to go through several more hoops in comparison. This is an example of the \u201ceasy in, difficult out\u201d trick that banks on the hope that the customer will not want to go through all the trouble to cancel.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">In the next example, a user\u2019s shopping cart is manipulated when he or she adds an iPad to it and the site throws in a case to go with it on behalf of the user.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7838 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.abstracta.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Screen-Shot-2016-10-26-at-11.50.15-AM-min.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2016-10-26 at 11.50.15 AM-min\" width=\"625\" height=\"412\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7839 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.abstracta.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Screen-Shot-2016-10-26-at-11.50.24-AM-min.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2016-10-26 at 11.50.24 AM-min\" width=\"629\" height=\"423\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">Worse, if the user doesn\u2019t uncheck a small box, he or she will end up paying for it! Brignull likens this to a grocery store manager dropping items in your shopping cart when you are looking the other way, hoping you don\u2019t take them out by the time you are at the register.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">For more on dark patterns, check out Brignull\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/darkpatterns.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">site<\/a><\/span> where you can also watch a video of his entertaining session on the topic at UX Brighton 2010.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_You_Let_the_Creepy_Crawlers_Run_Wild\"><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #f7911e;\">4. You Let the Creepy Crawlers Run Wild<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">Probably the worst trick you can pull on your users is leaving them to find the bugs in your software. How often do you open an app and find that upon clicking a button, it crashes, freezes, or some functionality stops working?
