{"id":9203,"date":"2017-05-26T22:47:11","date_gmt":"2017-05-26T22:47:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/abstracta.us\/?p=9203"},"modified":"2025-05-05T21:20:50","modified_gmt":"2025-05-05T21:20:50","slug":"testinguy-2017-michael-bolton-week-pure-testing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abstracta.us\/blog\/software-testing\/testinguy-2017-michael-bolton-week-pure-testing\/","title":{"rendered":"TestingUY 2017 with Michael Bolton, a Week of Pure Testing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!-- Go to www.addthis.com\/dashboard to customize your tools --><script src=\"\/\/s7.addthis.com\/js\/300\/addthis_widget.js#pubid=ra-58d80a50fc4f926d\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">A recap of the week of the fourth edition of TestingUY<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If I could describe last week in one word, it would be <\/span><b>intense.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> With <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/testinguy.org\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TestingUY<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Monday and Tuesday, the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.developsense.com\/courses.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rapid Software Testing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> course Wednesday through Friday by our keynote speaker, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/michaelbolton\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael Bolton<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(internationally acclaimed author and a co-creator of the Rapid Software Testing Methodology), and exploring M<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ontevideo Monday through Saturday with him and others, it was jam-packed but also highly beneficial. In this post, I will do my best to summarize all of what was TestingUY 2017, Latin America\u2019s largest testing conference, and the most relevant aspects of the entire week.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"TestingUY_Conference_2017\"><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #00b674;\">TestingUY Conference 2017<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The conference took place over the course of two days, May 15th and 16th, at the Antel Tower in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, which is where Abstracta\u2019s nearshore QE center is located (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abstracta.us\/2017\/03\/30\/uruguay-best-hub-software-qa-engineers-latin-america\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a burgeoning hub for software QE<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). We had a record number of attendees with over 300 people coming to the workshops and\/ or sessions not only from Uruguay, but also Argentina, Costa Rica, Venezuela, Cuba, Per\u00fa and Paraguay. Last but not least, there was one Canadian, Michael Bolton himself! <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Day_1_Highlights_Workshops_Roundtables\"><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Day 1 Highlights: Workshops &amp; Roundtables<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the AM, we had 5 workshops for testers:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verifying Security During Functional Testing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quality Plan: Clear Goals, Guaranteed Success<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">API Testing Using Chakram<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Automation of Non-functional Quality Attributes Using Xamarin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Test Capsules<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also had <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">five foundations that teach testing share their experiences and challenges: <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/nahual.uy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nahual<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.centrocadi.org\/que-es-cadi\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CADI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/fondationforge.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/antel.com.uy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TesTEA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uruguayintegra.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IntegraT<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the afternoon, we held three roundtables (panel-like discussions) with 12 experts from different organizations including Michael Bolton about the testing industry, testing in software development companies, and testing education. After each round table, there was time for an open Q&amp;A session with Michael Bolton. One of the most memorable moments of the afternoon was when Bolton <strong>performed a rap <\/strong>(see image below) emphasizing that testing cannot be automated, but checking is indeed automatable!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/abstracta.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/C_5A_ZYXUAAiRWp.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9225 size-large aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/abstracta.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/C_5A_ZYXUAAiRWp-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Michael Bolton rapping photo\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Day_2_Highlights_Sessions\"><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Day 2 Highlights: Sessions<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On day two, attendees had over 12 sessions to learn from industry leaders on topics ranging from exploratory testing to test automation to software testing in DevOps and performance testing. At the end of the day, Michael Bolton gave a brilliant keynote speech, \u201cA Ridiculously Rapid Introduction to Rapid Software Testing,\u201d which I can say with certainty, blew everyone away, and deepened the love that many of us have for testing. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The photos, videos and materials of the various talks, discussion panels and workshops will be available later on the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/testinguy.org\/en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TestingUY site<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as a video summarizing the complete experience. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Acknowledgements\"><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Acknowledgements<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As an organizer of the event and on behalf of Abstracta, there are several people whom we\u2019d like to thank: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To Michael Bolton for having come to Uruguay and for all his energy and motivation spread out through all of the different activities that happened over the course of the week.
