Did you know that violence against women has implications throughout society? What is a culture of equality and why is it desirable? What can we do to help from the IT industry?
There is no turning back: putting an end to gender violence is a necessity. Collectives in different parts of the world are calling for an end to a way of bonding that divides and alienates us. Meanwhile, technology plays a very important role in designing the world of the future and today it is almost omnipresent in the way we relate to each other.
Feminism is a movement that has been driven and sustained by women since its beginnings. But their struggle does not only affect the lives of those who identify with the pronoun “they”. It has repercussions throughout society.
Inequalities are dramatically unjust and sometimes even violates human rights.
Today there is greater awareness of the importance of equity. The permanent search for new balances is notorious. But stereotypes remain hidden: they are so deeply rooted that they are difficult to change. And change is only halfway.
We know of horrible statistics on gender-related murders worldwide, regionally and locally. We also know that countless others suffer psychological, domestic and workplace violence.
Every day it becomes clearer that violence generates much suffering and profound inequalities. Many of these occur in such a naturalized way that they sometimes become invisible.
Although there is no doubt that it is women who suffer the most, men also suffer great losses along the way. Today we know that we have to go one step further: we need equity without gender distinction.
Masculinities and femininities are constructed from the very moment we are born and, in one way or another, their biases influence us throughout our lives. At home, at school, at work, on the street, in our relationships, and in the way we feel.
Now, why is a technology company talking about this? We know that the changes that are generated in the workplace have an impact on the lives of the people who are part of it. For this reason, we have real transformative possibilities in the workplace.
We can promote more equitable and empowering environments for all people, minimizing inequalities. We have the possibility of providing and generating experiences where we can explore new ways of bonding with others and therefore with ourselves. Spaces where caring for ourselves and others is part of our daily lives. We can help.
A thriving industry such as the IT industry can play a key role in building a more just, equitable, egalitarian and, why not, healthy society. It is a privileged industry, with real opportunities for inclusion. Women have a lot to contribute here, with all their particular experiences and subjectivities.
If we foster a culture of equality and mutual care, we can have a profound impact on the organizational culture of companies, and on the health and quality of life of the people who work in them.
For all these reasons, we invite you to continue exploring together, questioning and evolving.
Equity unites us. All people, without exception, need to collaborate to rethink gender roles.
